Songfacts®:

  • Taylor Swift grew up on a Christmas tree farm that was run by her parents at their Pine Ridge Farm home in Reading, Pennsylvania. This festive song finds her caught up in the stress of the holiday buildup in the city. She closes her eyes and imagines:

    A Christmas tree farm
    Where the people would come
To dance under sparkles and lights
Bundled up in their mittens and coats
  • Taylor Swift wrote the song on December 1, 2019. According to the songstress, she asked her cats Meredith, Benjamin, and Olivia if she should release the tune straight away or wait till next year. The moggies shunned her with ambivalence, but Taylor decided to record the tune anyway. The pop star immediately hit the studio to record the track with London producer Jimmy Napes (Sam Smith's "Too Good At Goodbyes," Clean Bandit's "Rather Be"). There was a quick turnaround and the song was dropped on December 6, 2019.
  • This isn't Taylor's first Christmas release. Back in 2007, she dropped a holiday EP, The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection, which featured the original tunes "Christmases When You Were Mine" and "Christmas Must Be Something More."
  • Taylor Swift's childhood job on the Christmas tree farm was "picking the praying mantis pods off of the trees so the bugs wouldn't hatch inside people's houses."
  • The song's visual is made up from home videos of Taylor's childhood on the farm. The singer shares some of her most precious memories of the holiday season such as when she unwrapped her first-ever guitar on Christmas morning, and rolling around in the snow with her brother Austin.
  • Here are some Christmas tree fun facts from The Encyclopedia of Trivia:

The Christmas tree is believed to have originated in Germany. In the sixteenth century, German city merchants carried a fir tree decorated with paper flowers through the streets on Christmas Eve.

Hessian soldiers from Germany put up the first Christmas tree recorded in the USA. They were mercenaries hired from Prussia by King George III of England to fight in the Revolutionary War.

Production of ornaments and baubles on a mass scale started in Germany in the 1880s when a group of German entrepreneurs toyed began making little glass toys and other forms for hanging on Christmas trees.

The first plastic artificial Christmas tree was manufactured in 1930 by a British based company that made toilet brushes, the Addis Housewares Company. The trees were made from the same animal-hair bristles used in the brushes, save they were dyed green.

In Ukraine spiders or spider webs are common Christmas tree decorations. Spiders are seen as signs of goodness and prosperity during the festive season.

It takes the average Christmas Tree seven to ten years to mature. The average age of a Christmas tree when it's sold is fifteen.
  • Taylor Swift performed the song live for the first time on December 8, 2019, during her set at London's Jingle Bell Ball at The O2, London. Wearing a Santa hat, the pop star sang the tune while the track's video was projected behind her.
  • Taylor Swift released a swing-inspired version as an Amazon Original on November 22, 2021. Dubbed the "Old Timey Version," the songstress recorded it in London's Abbey Road Studios, with a 70-piece orchestra. Swift described it as having a "sort of laid-back Christmas feel of doing all your shopping and relaxing by a fire."
