Songfacts®:

  • In June 2016, Taylor Swift moved into 23 Cornelia Street, in New York's West Village. The singer had arranged to rent the Manhattan townhouse for several months while her Tribeca apartment was being renovated.

Not long after Swift moved into the property, she met and began dating British actor Joe Alwyn. This song is all about Swift's memories of the early days of their relationship while she was living in Cornelia Street.

    We were in the backseat
Drunk on something stronger than the drinks in the bar
"I rent a place on Cornelia Street"
I say casually in the car

During the chorus, Swift recalls how she started to develop feelings for Alwyn. The pop star remembers fearing she would be so heartbroken if they were ever to break up, she would never be able to return to Cornelia Street again.

I hope I never lose, I hope it never ends,
I'd never walk Cornelia Street again
That's the kind of heartbreak could never mend
  • Swift explained on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show that she wanted to write a nostalgic song about how "we kind of bond our memories to those places where those memories happened; it's just something we do if we romanticize life, which I tend to do."
  • Swift wrote the ballad on her own. She co-produced it with Jack Antonoff, who has frequently collaborated with the songstress; he is credited as a co-writer on eight of the 18 Lover tracks.
  • Taylor Swift played "Cornelia Street" live for the first time during her Mexico City concert on August 26, 2023.
