Songfacts®:

  • Penned in 2008, this song never made it onto the final track-listing for the original cut of Fearless, but when Taylor's former record label boss sold the rights to her first six albums without her permission, the country-turned-pop superstar re-recorded the sextet. While redoing Fearless, Swift added some previously unreleased oldies but goodies from the era, including "Don't You."
  • Don't you smile at me and ask me how I've been
Don't you say you've missed me if you don't want me again
You don't know how much I feel I love you still
So why don't you, don't you?

The song finds Swift running into a former boyfriend. While her ex has moved on to someone else and is friendly to the singer, she isn't in the mood to reciprocate. Swift hasn't got over the split and can't understand why he doesn't feel the same way.
  • Hey, I knew I'd run into you somewhere
    It's been a while, I didn't mean to stare
I heard she's nothin' like me
I'm sure she'll make you happy

Many Swifties suspect the ex in question is Joe Jonas, whom she dated in the summer of 2008. He began seeing actress Camilla Belle shortly after breaking up with Taylor after they met on the set of the Jonas Brothers "Lovebug" video.

Other Swift songs believed to be about her split from Jonas include "Forever & Always," "Last Kiss," and "Mr. Perfectly Fine." Also, many fans suspect Swift is addressing Camilla Belle on her kiss-off track "Better Than Revenge."
  • Swift penned the song with the Nashville songwriter Tommy Lee James. "We wrote it about the idea of seeing someone that you used to have a thing for, and seeing them out in public for the first time after you've heard that they've move on," she explained to Spotify. "That, you know, your life is kind of in shambles and they have moved on and they're really happy. And it's almost like, even them being nice to you hurts you, because you're like, in such a state of pain and you haven't moved on yet."
  • Swift co-produced the version she recorded for Fearless (Taylor's Version) with Jack Antonoff. The Bleachers frontman also contributed background vocals and played electric guitar, keyboards and drums.
