Songfacts®:

  • This is the sixth single from Taylor Swift's third studio album Speak Now. The song was taken from the Deluxe edition of the LP and released as a promotional single for digital download to iTunes and Amazon on November 8, 2011. Taylor performed the song at the 2011 Country Music Association Awards the following evening.
  • The song finds Taylor in a relationship of which others do not approve. She reassures her beau that despite the criticism they are getting, she loves him. Possible clues in the lyrics as to the identity of the person she is singing of include:
    1) "I love the gap between your teeth" (Toby Hemingway from the "Mine" video fits that description)
    2) "Any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored" (John Mayer's entire left arm is covered in a sleeve tattoo, and his body is sprinkled with assorted other inked creations).
  • The song was written solely by Swift, who also manned the boards along with her usual producer Nathan Chapman. The Nashville knob twiddler has also worked with Shania Twain, Lauren Alaina and Laura Bell Bundy amongst others.
  • The video was directed by Declan Whitebloom, who was also responsible for Swift's "Mean." It finds the singer as a frumpy-dressed office worker getting through a difficult day by watching various videos of herself and her boyfriend who is played by Zach Gilford. The actor is best known for his role as Matt Saracen on the NBC television drama series Friday Night Lights.

Speaking with E! News, Whitebloom explained Swift had a definite idea for the visual. "When Taylor says, 'I've got an idea,' you listen to what she's gonna say," he said. "And so I did, and it was a great idea - and I loved it!"
  • Taylor is seen wearing gray knee-length skirt and gym sneakers with unkempt hair and no make up in the clip. In the "making of" film chronicling the video, she described her look as, "corporate not chic." The Country superstar added: "I told Declan [Whitebloom] I really don't want this to be something where it looks like it's trying to be a cute music video as far as, like, fashion sense. I didn't want it to be anything fashionable or anything you would aspire to."
  • Any of you spot a wallpaper picture of a tiny cat on Swift's work computer in the video? That's her own kitten, Meredith, who Taylor named after Ellen Pompeo's character on Grey's Anatomy.
  • This became Taylor's sixth country chart-topper when the song stepped 3-1 in its 17th chart week.

  • Karen from Manchester, NhAs a former cubicle-rat, this video brings back memories! I especially love the whole bit with the copier: "Out of paper"..."Out of toner"...out of machine! A side note: that gorgeous kitten of Taylor's is a Scottish Fold.
