Songfacts®:

  • "So High School" finds Taylor Swift knee-deep in the throes of a full-blown teenage obsession. Giddiness abounds as she belts out about the electrifying thrill of a new beau, and that intoxicating feeling of being hopelessly, ridiculously smitten.
  • This starry-eyed Romeo isn't exactly your high school locker-slamming jock. Enter Travis Kelce, the formidable tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, whom Swift started dating in July 2023. The song, you see, plays with this contrast. Kelce, the public titan, juxtaposed with the giddy vulnerability of a high school romance.
  • Why do we think Swift is singing about her footballer boyfriend? She sprinkles several clues into her lyrics.

Clue One: Are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me?

This is a sly reference to a resurfaced interview from the dusty archives of 2016, where Kelce had three options in a game of Kiss, Marry, Kill: Swift, Ariana Grande and Katy Perry. He chose to "kiss" Taylor. Clearly, a man who knows what he wants and, by golly, goes after it. (In case you're wondering, Kelce chose kill for Grande and marry for Perry).

Clue Two: You knew what you wanted and, boy, you got her

Kelce revealed in an interview that prior to starting a relationship with Swift, he pursued the pop superstar by making her a "friendship bracelet" complete with his phone number scrawled on it and attended one of her Eras Tour Concerts.

Clue Three: You know how to ball, I know Aristotle

While Kelce is busy catching touchdowns, Taylor's here name-dropping ancient Greek philosophers. Opposites attract, they say. In this case, they write catchy pop tunes about it. Swift previously quoted Aristotle in her Folklore track "Cardigan," when she sang "A friend to all is a friend to none."
  • Crafted by Swift with Aaron Dessner, a frequent collaborator on Taylor's sonic journeys, the song boasts a lively pop-rock arrangement. Think back to the infectious energy of "Hits Different" from her 2022 album, Midnights, and you've got the right idea.
  • "So High School" nestles as the 22nd track on The Anthology, the double-album edition of Swift's 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department. It's rumored to be one of the later additions to the collection, as it refers to more recent events.
  • When Taylor Swift announced her engagement to Travis Kelce on Instagram, she soundtracked the moment with "So High School." Swift's post has the caption "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married," which fans and media quickly linked to the lyrics and playful spirit of "So High School."

Following the reveal, Spotify reported a nearly 400% surge in streams for the song as listeners revisited the track in light of the engagement news.
