  • "Lose Control" isn't just a song, it's a raw, emotional battle cry. Teddy Swims sings about how love turns him into a mess of emotions when he's not with his sweetheart.

Swims wrote it about a romance he was in at the time. Reflecting on the experience, he told Official Charts: "I was sinking down from a bad relationship I was in. I wasn't taking care of myself. It got really co-dependent. I wanted to leave but didn't know how. When I did, it turned out to be the best thing for both of us. You can love somebody so much that it's not good for you anymore."
  • From the first note, Swims dives into the deep end of love's pool. He croons about feeling like the walls are closing in and the skin is tearing off his bones. It's a bad case of lovesickness.

"Being in love can be like an addiction sometimes - always chasing the highs from the lows," Swims said of the track. "It's about losing yourself and losing control when it all starts to cave in and thinking that the only way out is through being with that person, chasing that feeling over and over again."
  • Swims co-wrote this song with Mikky Ekko, Infamous, and the track's two producers, Julian Bunetta and Ammo.

American singer-songwriter Mikky Ekko is best known for featuring on Rihanna's 2013 worldwide hit "Stay."

Marco Rodriguez "Infamous" Diaz is a DJ and record producer. He has worked with many artists but is most known for his work with Lil Wayne.

Julian Bunetta is an American songwriter, record producer, and drummer. He was one of One Direction's primary songwriters and producers, overseeing four of their albums and regularly writing with the band members themselves.

Joshua "Ammo" Coleman is an American record producer and songwriter. He has co-written and produced songs for Beyoncé ("Pretty Hurts"), Katy Perry ("E.T."), Maroon 5 ("Sugar") and Fifth Harmony ("Work from Home").
  • "Lose Control" is the lead single from Swims' 2023 debut album, I've Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1). Released June 23, 2023 via SWIMS Int./Warner Records, it debuted at #99 on the Hot 100 dated August 26, 2023, marking Swims' first appearance on the chart.
  • "Lose Control" was forged in the desert heat of a four-day Palm Springs camp. Joining forces with Julian Bunetta, Ammo, Infamous, and Mikky Ekko, Swims set the bar high: a vocally demanding track that explodes into a lung-busting chorus reminiscent of "Tennessee Whiskey."

"With that song, it's all about the run," he explained to Variety. "If you can't hit that run, why would you even sing it?"

Their mission? To craft the ultimate future karaoke anthem, "catchy enough for everyone to want to sing, but not everyone can master." Bunetta and Ekko laid the groundwork with the first two verses, then Swims stepped up to the mic. The first playback confirmed their hunch - this was something special.

"For the first time in my career, I thought, 'God, this is going to change my life,'" he admitted. And it did.
  • Swims finally landed a hit with "Lose Control" after years of making music. Why is the song is so popular? "You don't hear a lot of songs like 'Lose Control' anymore," he suggested to Variety. "It's got roots in country, rock, Motown, and R&B - and it was made to be sung live."

"We've put money into doing regular videos before, but for us that always ends up being a waste of time," he added. "People still want to see live music."
  • The song climbed to #1 on the Hot 100 in its 32nd week on the chart. This marked the longest run to the top spot, by weeks on the chart, for a solo male in the list's history.
  • "Lose Control" ranked #1 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles list of 2024.
  • "Lose Control" topped the charts in several European countries, including Belgium, Bulgaria, Iceland and Switzerland.
  • The song's genesis was in February 2023 during a writing camp. Sitting on the lawn of an Airbnb, Swims opened up to his collaborator Julian Bunetta about the emotional weight of the relationship he was struggling to navigate. The raw, vulnerable conversation became the foundation for "Lose Control."

At the time, the romance hadn't yet ended, and in hindsight, Swims sees the song as a kind of subconscious nudge, urging him toward the clarity he needed.
  • Though the relationship came to an end, Swims has been clear that there's no lingering animosity. In fact, he thinks the breakup was ultimately the healthiest choice for both of them. They've since moved on, each thriving in their own way. Swims turned the pain of that period into a song that resonates deeply with anyone who's ever had to let go, no matter how much it hurt.
  • Swims sang "Lose Control" at the Grammy Awards in 2025, where he lost Best New Artist to Chappell Roan.
  • "Lose Control" is the longest charting song on the Hot 100 of all time. On the chart dated May 24, 2025, it surpassed the 91-week run of Glass Animals' "Heat Waves" (in 2021-2022), which had held the record since October 2022. The track finally dropped out of the ranking in October 2025 after 112 weeks.
