Songfacts®:

  • Beck's longtime bassist and musical director Justin Meldal-Johnsen took on production duties for this track. Tegan co-wrote the tune with dance partners Sultan & Ned Shepard. She told Under The Radar: "When they sent me the track for 'Drove Me Wild,' it sounded, to me, like The Killers. I loved it."
  • Regarding the song's lyrical content, Tegan told Under the Radar: "I was really trying, at that point, not to write anything really self-deprecating or self-loathing. I went back into the depths of my memory, sort of pressed the nostalgia button, and thought about finding every romantic, incredibly repressed moment and tried to draw some very simple imagery so that people would listen and be, like, 'Oh my god, that's so romantic!' The song is really all about someone holding back from being with you, but in this really romantic way. Again, I was trying not to be sad."
  • Tegan explained that as "the song was quite long and vocal-heavy," she "felt it could really use a brief break" from her. So, she got her twin and musical partner Sara to pen the bridge and sing it.
  • This is one of several songs on Hearthrob that found Tegan getting nostalgic for her "late teen years and first crushes and loves." She told FMQB: "These are all songs that I wrote where I felt so happy and content and amazing about my life, but I am also able to draw the parallels to the time in my life where I felt anxious, and it's nice to wrap those things up in a song."
