Songfacts®:

  • Nigerian R&B and Afrobeats singer-songwriter Temilade "Tems" Openiyi released her debut single, "Mr. Rebel," in 2018. She rose to prominence three years later when she featured on Wizkid's international hit "Essence" and Drake's Certified Lover Boy track "Fountains." This song, from Tems' 2020 debut EP, For Broken Ears, became her first Hot 100 hit 22 months after its release.
  • Tems wrote and produced "Free Mind" alongside co-producer Omeiza. She sings on the introspective track about the mental strains of tough situations and her battles with her thoughts. Tems fears the problems are taking over her, and she's falling into a dark place. She turns to God to free her from the prison of her mind and grant her peace.
  • Tems started making music to help her get over a bout of depression as a teenager. She wrote the songs on For Broken Ears "for anyone looking for an alternative to the darkness. Those who need a break from the toxicity they consume and supply on a daily basis."
