Songfacts®:

  • Los Angeles indie rock group The Airborne Toxic Event's second single from All At Once was inspired by the band's extensive touring schedule in support of their debut release. Guitarist Steven Chen explained to Spinner: "The idea for 'Numb' grew out of the deep, omnipresent bass at all these festivals we played back-to-back in 2009. Walking around, we were instantly bombarded by nondescript thumping music and masses of people. There's a tendency to withdraw completely into your own head at these moments, and the song is about that feeling of detachment that washes over you even as you find yourself surrounded."
