Songfacts®:

  • In a Songfacts interview with B-52 Cindy Wilson (who sings lead on this one) called "Nip It In The Bud" one of her attempts to write a "punk-ish" song.

And in punk tradition, Wilson's lyrics convey more of a feeling than a story, as she repeatedly directs someone to "nip it in the bud." The B-52s' vocalists would often improvise lyrics during jam sessions.
  • The lines "head 'em up, head 'em up, move 'em out, move 'em out, hooah," refers to the theme song of the 1960s television show Rawhide.
  • This is the final track on the Mesopotamia EP, which was produced by David Byrne of the Talking Heads. The B-52s had a hankering to work with him after touring with Talking Heads.
