Songfacts®:

  • The Besnard Lakes are an indie rock band from Montreal, Canada who were formed by the husband and wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas. This song was released as the first single from their third studio album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night.
  • The band's name comes from Besnard Lake in North-Central Saskatchewan. Lasek explained why he's so fond of the location on the Drowned In Sound website: "I grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan and in 1995 I started travelling up to Besnard Lake as a summer trip with my friend. We loved it so much we made a promise to return every year to clear our heads… It's a very secluded place, and very hard to get to. You really feel like you are the only people there."
  • The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night was recorded at the band's own studio, Breakglass Studio, using a 1968 Neve germanium mixing console rumored to have been used to record portions of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti. Many of the tracks feature an assortment of instruments with dense layers and walls of noise. "We sabotaged ourselves sometimes, like on the track 'Albatross,' " Lasek told Billboard magazine. "We added a noise part to the song so it couldn't work at radio."
