The Beta Band were formed in 1996 by vocalists and guitarists Steve Mason and Gordon Anderson, who had originally planned to call themselves The Pigeons before changing their minds. Gordon Anderson is the brother of Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote.
The name "The Beta Band" came from a suggestion by a friend. "The alpha band were the top of the class, keyboardist John Maclean explained to The List. "The beta band were the worst."
Although widely identified as an Edinburgh band, the group's founding members Mason and Anderson actually came from St. Andrews, Fife, and the band coalesced while living in a flat in Shepherd's Bush, London.
Anderson's time in the band was brief. Shortly after they signed to Regal/Parlophone, he left because of illness. He later recorded as Lone Pigeon and eventually reunited with Maclean and drummer Robin Jones in The Aliens.
When their self-titled debut album arrived in 1999, Mason made headlines by calling it "f---ing awful." The band felt they had been rushed by their label into releasing material that wasn't finished, blaming tight deadlines and limited budgets for the record's rough edges.
Despite their rocky start, the group earned high-profile fans. Radiohead and Oasis both championed them, with Thom Yorke and Noel Gallagher praising their sound. Radiohead later invited The Beta Band to open on their 2001 tour.
For their 2001 album Hot Shots II, the band planned to release "Squares" as the lead single and even filmed a video. They scrapped those plans when they discovered I Monster were releasing a track using the same Günter Kallmann Choir sample. Instead, they issued "Broke," with "Squares" following six months later.
The band split in August 2004, citing financial disputes with Regal. At the time, they reportedly owed the label £1.2 million. Their final performance took place on December 5, 2004, at Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh.
Although critically acclaimed and widely respected by peers, The Beta Band never achieved major chart success. Their highest-charting album, Hot Shots II, reached #13 in the UK and #200 in the US, while their highest-charting UK single, "Broke/Won," peaked at #30.
In March 2025, the band announced a reunion tour across the UK and North America, marking their first live shows in 21 years. The tour features a full performance of The Three E.P.'s, the release that brought them to a wider audience.
