Songfacts®:

  • Like many songs on Turn Blue, this rave-up about traveling across the country to get away from a tumultuous relationship addresses the end of frontman Dan Auerbach's marriage to Stephanie Gonis. The song was penned by The Black Keys pair in just ten minutes. "It made me a little bit uncomfortable because it was so classic-sounding, but we couldn't deny it," vocalist and guitarist Dan Auerbach told Rolling Stone. "At this point, there are absolutely no rules."
  • Drummer Patrick Carney spent three or four days in his studio sequencing the songs on Turn Blue to where he thought everything flowed the right way. He took it over to Dan Auerbach who suggested the album should close with this track. Carney explained to Radio.com: "I just wanted the record to close with 'In Our Time,' but Dan was like, 'It's just too sad of a song to end the album that way.' So, we decided to put the catchy, most upbeat song at the end."

"Actually, I think it works well at the end, too," he added. "It erases your brain from whatever heavy elements there are in the record. I think maybe it encourages you to go back and listen to the record again."
