Songfacts®:

  • Although it sounds like an old English folk song, "The Floral Dance" is actually a Twentieth Century composition. It was written by Kate Emily Barclay (known as Katie Moss), a classically trained musician and singer who studied at the Royal Academy Of Music, although the sheet music, which was published by the London firm of Chappell in 1911 says it was founded on an old Cornish air. The song was first recorded in 1912, by the Australian classical singer Peter Dawson, but the best known recording is probably the instrumental version recorded by the Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band. The sheet music for this particular recording credits Words and Music by Katie Moss, Recorded by the Brighouse & Rastrick Band on Transatlantic Records, published by Chappell of Ilford, copyright 1911. The single, which was backed by "The Girl With Flaxen Hair" runs to 2 minutes 25 seconds, spent 9 weeks in the charts and is said to have sold half a million copies, missing the UK number one spot by a whisker. Shortly it was also recorded by the TV presenter Terry Wogan.

Moss is said to have written the song on the train home from a festival, and it appears to be based on personal experience.
  • Unsurprisingly, "The Floral Dance" featured in the 1996 film Brassed Off, in which the original soundtrack was performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band. >>>
