Songfacts®:

  • Here, Jay-Z and Beyoncé rap fiery rhymes about their love of black culture.

Got slowed down by the weight of my necklaces
Parked the Lexus in the projects, bitch I'm reckless
Extra magazine hopped on a jet with my Ebony chick
    Blacker than the Essence fest

The song is an unapologetic anthem in which the power couple proclaim themselves symbols of black wealth.
  • Miami producers Cool and Dre supplied the instrumentation for the track. They also supplied the beats for the Everything Is Love cuts "Summer" and "713" as well as the single "Salud!"
  • Immediately after announcing their On the Run II tour in March 2018, Beyoncé and Jay-Z spent time in Kingston, Jamaica to shoot footage for a film that plays during their joint trek. This song opens with a clip from the movie where they spoke to Dr. Lenora Antoinette Stines, a Jamaican choreographer and lecturer.
  • Stines filed a lawsuit on June 16, 2020 claiming Beyoncé and Jay-Z didn't give her proper credit for her part in their song.

In the court documents obtained by TMZ, Stines said the superstar couple asked her to recruit various local dancers to take part in a promotional video for Everything Is Love. While on set, Stines was interviewed concerning her views on love, which she was told would be used in the film. She allegedly signed a contract, when again she was told her monologue would only be used for promotional purposes.

Upon hearing "Black Effect," Stines was stunned to hear that the entire first minute of the tune is of her speaking. Just as astonishing was she wasn't credited for her part in the song; the lack of recognition left her feeling "artistically raped."

Stines is suing Beyoncé and Jay for copyright infringement and requesting damages, a writing credit, and the royalties that come with such a credit.
