Songfacts®:

  • Voice Of Ages is a collaborative album released in honor of the Chieftains' 50th anniversary. The Irish musical group teamed up with various contemporary musicians for the record and this song was written and recorded by Joy Williams and John Paul White of the Civil Wars. "What a treat to have such wonderful artists in Joy and John Paul and to have them write a song to celebrate the Chieftains' 50th anniversary album," the band's leader Paddt Moloney told Rolling Stone. "I couldn't be more pleased. In the 'Lily Love' melody, I can hear strains of the Irishness of it, and to play, arrange and add my thoughts to it just came naturally."
  • Voice Of Ages debuted at #17 on the Billboard 200, the Chieftains best ever showing on the album chart. The group's previously best-ranked set was The Long Black Veil, which peaked at #22 in 1995.
