Songfacts®:

  • The Damned Things is a supergroup featuring Every Time I Die's Keith Buckley, Fall Out Boy's Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley, Anthrax's Scott Ian and Alkaline Trio's Dan Andriano. This fast punk song was recorded as the opening track of their second album High Crimes.
  • Buckley wrote the lyrics for "Cells" when Every Time I Die was touring in Australia. They recorded it in Trohman's studio basement in two takes.
  • Buckley explained the track's meaning to Kerrang: "The song's about being sick of explaining yourself to people and how you're ultimately gonna do what you're gonna do. You've made your mistakes and you don't want to dwell on them, so you want to get on with your life instead of dissecting everything that you've done and figuring out how everything relates to everything else in the long run. It's more of a spontaneous song, a spontaneous recording, and a spontaneous topic. It all came together pretty nicely."
