Songfacts®:

  • This twisted interrogation of Alison Mosshart by Jack White's titular lawman was originally the B-side to "Open Up (That's Enough)" single in October 2013. A limited edition 7" vinyl, it was released through Jack White's Third Man Records's Vault Club. The song was later remixed and remastered for Dodge & Burn, released in 2015.
  • A detective is an investigator, usually a member of a law enforcement agency who looks for evidence as part of solving a crime. The word was formed in the 1840s at the time when an organized police force was being developed in the UK. Charles Dickens was one of the first to draw attention to the name, reporting in his magazine Household Words in 1850 that "To each division of the Force is attached two officers, who are determined 'detectives.'"
  • Other artists that have recorded songs with "detective" in the title include Elvis Costello and Thompson Twins.
