Songfacts®:

  • Written by lead singer Dan Zanes and bass player Tom Lloyd, this was one of the first hits for the Boston based band. They got some initial attention when Miller featured them in a national beer commercial as part of their "Made the American Way" campaign, which got them a lot of exposure and also some critical scorn, as commercials were seen as selling out at the time.

Whatever was good about mid-late 80s music (like Replacements kind of good) is somewhere in this song. Stinging and echoey guitar riffs, simple but powerful lyrics, smoky background organ music and a Budweiser (or maybe Miller) long neck in a pool hall sensibility. >>>
