  • Mike Hranica recounts here his degeneration.

Call me "The Sound and the Fury"
    Consider me dead and buried
    I'm like the city's grime
    No time for no crime

The song draws influence from American author William Faulkner's 1929 novel The Sound and the Fury, which deals with a southern family in decline.
  • Southern author William Faulkner (1897 –1962) is primarily known for his novels and short stories set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, where he spent most of his life. Faulkner was relatively unknown until receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature, but today The Sound and the Fury is recognised as one of the classic English-language novels of the 20th century. Other songs and bands inspired by him include:

"To The End" by My Chemical Romance (Based on a short story by William Faulkner called A Rose for Emily)

"Distant Early Warning" by Rush (The "Absalom, Absalom, Absalom" lyric at the end of the song came from the title of William Faulkner's 1936 novel Absalom, Absalom. Rush lyricist Neil Peart loved the sound of.the title.)

The band As I Lay Dying took their name from a 1930 William Faulkner novel of the same title.
