Songfacts®:

  • Frontman Wayne Coyne explained to Mojo magazine the song is, "about how the sun coming up is the end of our great freedom from our horrible daily responsibilities, so the sun is our enemy! It's the same us as saying, We're not a well-rounded group, we're a damaged bunch of pathetic a--holes."
  • Wayne Coyne elaborated on the song's meaning of the sun's rising being a tyranny that governs us all. He explained to MusicRadar.com: "Lyrically, I think I'm when I'm singing, 'Look, the sun is rising,' it's about how we can dread it. We want to be lost in that netherworld, like when you're on drugs or something. It's four in the morning, but you want to keep those moments - when they're really good, of course - when you've escaped your own identity or your own mind. You want that to last forever.

"There have been a couple of times," Coyne continued, "over the last few years when we've said that out loud: We think it's four in the morning, but it's really six-thirty, and we know what that means: 'F--k, the sun is coming up. We have to go back to being ourselves again. We have to be normal. Back to routines, back to life.' So it's just another way of looking at the sunrise."

"The sunrise is our symbol. It tries every day. It gets up every day and says, 'Maybe today will be glorious.'"
  • The Terror was released April 1, 2013 worldwide and April 16, 2013 in the US. Coyne explained during a Reddit AMA why the band decided to release the album in the Spring. "I think it's also a record about acceptance," he said. "When the world expects you to be all sunshine, you want to express feelings that are the opposite so that others can share what you're feeling. You want what you're going through to be expressed and shared. It's even more useful when you're not just happy that the suns coming out. You can be happy in the beginning of the day, sad in the middle, and happy in the end of the day."
