Songfacts®:

  • This song is an indictment of people with power use it to abuse or belittle people. According to lead singer Wayne Coyne, it asks the listener, "What would you do?" if given power. He feels power can be very dangerous in the hands of the wrong person. >>>

  • This is the album's second single and remains the band's highest-charting song in the UK at #16.
  • Wayne discussed the album title in a 2006 interview with Harp magazine: "Someone asked me if I had a title for the record, and I didn't really have one but I said, 'I have this title, it sounds kind of cool.' It went along, all this sort of stuff about how insane the religious right has become, and all this kind of inner politics of suicide bombers, and the whole mentality of the fanatical religious freaks, and how in a sense they all are self-proclaimed mystics. They seem to know some insight that just us regular people would never see."
  • This was used in a 2008 commercial for Kraft salad dressing. It also appeared in Intel's "Raise Your Hand" ad campaign and an Oklahoma Gas & Electric's wind power commercial (which also featured an appearance by Coyne and other famous Oklahoma natives).
  • This was used in the movies I Love You, Man (2009) and The Brothers Solomon (2007).
  • The album won two Grammy Awards: Best Rock Instrumental Performance (for "The Wizard Turns On... The Giant Silver Flashlight And Puts On His Werewolf Moccasins") and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. It was also nominated for Best Alternative Album but lost to St. Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley.

  • Rj from Wayland, Mii think that it's not even just for power in the wrong hands, but in *anyone's* hands. "because you cannot know yourself or what you'd really do" morals are great, but how do you know if you won't break them when you're not needed to uphold them?
  • Tyler from Green Bay, Wii argee olivia. this song was also on FIFA Street 2 and a commercial for Kraft
