Songfacts®:

  • The Forester Sisters were four sisters from Georgia who had three #1 Country hits from their 1985 debut album, starting with "I Fell In Love Again Last Night." The song is about falling in love with your spouse over and over, every day waking up to find the flame of passion still burning bright.
  • The song was written by Thom Schuyler and Paul Overstreet, who were both relatively new to the Nashville songwriting scene. Overstreet had gone through a divorce (to Dolly Parton's sister!) and hadn't yet met his second wife, but Schuyler was married and still giddy in love. When they got together to write, Overstreet told Schuyler, "I fell in love again last night," a tongue-in-cheek way of describing a casual fling. Schuyler liked the title was wanted to take the song in a different direction, making it sincere.

A few years later when they wrote another marriage commitment hit - "A Long Line Of Love" for Michael Martin Murphey - Overstreet was married to the love of his life, Julie.
  • Thom Schuyler had this to say about the song in the Billboard Book Of #1 Country Hits: "When you really get down to it, as trite as it may seem, married people need to stay in love. They need to care about one another, and they need to excite one another emotionally and physically, and all sorts of things. That's what Paul and I wanted to write about, falling in love again with the person you married."
