Songfacts®:

  • The Format were an American rock band formed by Nate Ruess and his high school friend Sam Means. The group released two albums, Interventions + Lullabies (2003) and Dog Problems (2006), before announcing a hiatus on February 4, 2008. Following The Format's split, Ruess joined with Andrew Dost of Anathallo and Jack Antonoff of Steel Train to form Fun.
  • Ruess explained the background to this track during a 2015 Reddit AMA: "I had a girlfriend at the time who moved to California to go to school. And naturally, because of the distance, and our age, we drifted apart. And it was just about me trying to make sense of that."
