When The Four Seasons signed as artists to Bob Crewe's production company in 1960, they started doing session work singing backup for some of the producer's other artists. One of these was Hal Miller & The Rays "An Angel Cried", a song co-written by The Four Seasons' Bob Gaudio that was recorded in 1961.

The Four Seasons laid down their own version three years later, for their Rag Doll album.
One morning in the first half of 2018, Ariana Grande woke up with this song in her head. At the time she was completing work on her Sweetener album and she decided to start off the record with a 37-second, somber a cappella cover titled "Raindrops (An Angel Cried)." The songstress explained to Jimmy Fallon that she knew she just had to record her own version after discovering that her grandfather's best friend, who she grew up hanging out with, Charlie Calello, wrote it with Bob. "And that gave me goosebumps," she said.
