Songfacts®:

  • This was written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, who were producers at the ABC-Dunhill label where The Four Tops recorded from 1973-1978 after leaving Motown Records. Lambert and Potter were responsible for many of the label's hits, including Coven's "One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)" and Don't Pull Your Love (Out) by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds. This song is similar to many Motown hits in that it's a well-crafted and soulful song about strong affection.
  • This was the biggest hit for The Four Tops after their departure from Motown.
  • In 1996, Jay-Z released an interpretation of this song with very questionable moral values called "Ain't No Nigga." His version features rapper Foxy Brown, who was 16 at the time.

  • Camille from Toronto, OhI love The Fifth Dimension. I love Friends of Distinction. I don't think they have the same sound. I wish Songfacts would put up some songs by F of D because their few hits songs totally rock and stand the test of time.
  • Clubber Lange from Ocean Gate, Nj"Ill Turn to Stone" is their best hit, it should be on here...
  • John from Nashville, TnThis song was first released as a single in 1972 by Friends of Distinction. This Fifth Dimension knockoff group had a few hit in the late 60s and early seventies ("Grazin' In The Grass", "Going In Circles" and "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely").
