Songfacts®:

  • The Fratellis first album, Costello Music, was released in 2006 and contained the stadium mainstay "Chelsea Dagger." Their next album, Here We Stand, came out in 2008. The subsequent touring and pressures proved too much for the trio, so they split in 2009. It wasn't until 2013 that they re-formed for their third album We Need Medicine, but lead singer Jon Fratelli never stopped writing; in the interim, he formed the band Codeine Velvet Club and also released a solo album called Psycho Jukebook.

In our 2013 interview with Jon Fratelli, he cited this song as one of his favorites on the album, and explained how it came together:

"Shotgun Shoes' started life as fifteen random verses I wrote each morning as a way to wake my brain up. I like how it ended up taking on another life."
