Songfacts®:

  • Fray guitarist Joe King penned this song about feeling lost during one of the lowest points of his life. "That actually came out of a very dark time in my life," he explained to Jam! Music. "My marriage ended and it was the last day of everything. I just went home and had no answer and no clue where the hell I was in life. I was completely lost and just sat down at the piano and let whatever happens happen. I walked away from it and then went back in a couple of months later. It was good to have that perspective a few months later on the emotion of it, going from that heavy of a place to seeing some light and the future."
  • King based the song around the concept of the word "disorient," and what it meant to explorers in the fifteenth century. He explained to Denver Westword: "I connected to the early Eastern explorers who were in the middle of the ocean not knowing where they were and not knowing if they was going to fall off the edge of the earth, or if they were going to discover new land, or if they were ever going to see their families again. That was me."
  • King texted Fray vocalist Isaac Slade a voice recording of the song, the hour that he wrote it. The singer recalled to Denver Westword: "I was out in California with my wife. We were driving on the PCH, Highway 1 going up the coast, with the top down, and I was like, 'Hey, Joe sent me a song. You want to listen to it?' We both kind of leaned in in this kind of very romantic moment on the beach, driving up the highway, listening to this heartbreaking recording, and we started tearing up at this lost but hopeful recording."
