For most of the songs the French Kicks write, they use working titles until they come up with a real one. "Piano" began as the working title of this song because of the prominence of the instrument in the song. The group decided to just leave it because it seemed to fit the song.
Included as a bonus track on some versions of the group's full-length debut, One Time Bells. Lead singer Nick Stumpf says this decision was made because "Piano" is the group's favorite song from their earlier material and the one they still play most frequently in concert.
Both Stumpf and guitarist Matt Stinchcomb graduated from Oberlin College in the late 1990's. Stumpf says he loved the musical atmosphere there provided by the Conservatory of Music. He remembers practicing for hours everyday on the school's Steinway pianos. He is now the band's drummer.
