Songfacts®:

  • When they recorded their debut album, the group was destitute. They had no money and had been sleeping on various floors and couches. Lead singer Nick Stumpf described them as being "at the end of our rope... we had been homeless for about 9 months."
  • Nick Stumpf wrote the lyrics the day before he was supposed to recorded the vocals. It was a Sunday night, and he took a walk around Manhattan to get inspiration. The city was empty, and what Stumpf saw on his walk felt similar to the mood of the song's music. Sunday nights are also a time when he feels exhausted from the week and weekend, which also seemed to fit what became "Sunday Night is Fair."
  • This song also features a Wurlitzer, a type of electric piano. Stumpf says that many people mistake the sound of it for a guitar.
