Songfacts®:

  • Get Hurt finds The Gaslight Anthem playing both harder, but also sweeter. The opening track lays the cards on the table, being both furious and tender. "I said (to producer Mike Crossey), 'I got this idea to use this really heavy riffs in the beginning and then completely flip-turn and make the song the prettiest thing we've ever done," frontman Brian Fallon explained to NME.

"It's different, but you don't want to have to explain it," he added. "You are letting people know right off at the get-go."
  • Brian Fallon's divorce from his wife of ten years, Hollie, is a big influence on Get Hurt. The frontman references on this song his refusal to fall into the typical post-separation pitfalls of addictive substances when he talks about his medicine cabinet full of unused prescription pills.

    I have pills for this
    Tabs for that
And something that used to resemble a soul

Instead of trying to run away from his sorrows by medicating, Fallon concentrated on his work, writing and recording the Get Hurt album.
