Songfacts®:

  • This may not be an exceptional song, but what is exceptional is the way the Salford band set about recording the video for it. They set up their instruments under the scrutiny of CCTV cameras in locations all around neighboring Manchester, including on a tram and in the middle of a zebra crossing, then wrote to the various bodies concerned requesting footage under the Freedom Of Information Act. The reason they did this, ostensibly, was because they couldn't afford to make it in the regular fashion. Not all the footage used in the resulting video was genuine CCTV, and the band also had representation from a high powered PR company, which does tend to undermine their plea of poverty, but the gimmick paid dividends, and the song received international coverage. >>>
