Songfacts®:

  • Aside from being a veteran rock star, Goo Goo Dolls lead singer John Rzeznik is also a dad; his daughter, Liliana, was born in 2016. When producer, songwriter, and soon-to-be father Derek Fuhrmann joined him on a songwriting session, this uplifting pop-rock tune "unintentionally became like a little piece of advice to our kids." Rzeznik explained in an interview with Grammy.com: "The message is, you got to be strong, you got to be yourself. There's a lot of shiny, pretty objects out there that when you actually touch them, they just fall apart. And it's like, you need to be authentic, you need to be yourself."
  • Derek Fuhrmann also contributed to the band's previous album, Boxes, co-writing and co-producing the single "So Alive."
  • Miracle Pill is the band's 12th studio album. It was recorded in the basement of Capitol Records in Hollywood, the same location they used for their 2002 album, Gutterflower.
  • The music video, directed by Joelle Grace Taylor, follows a young woman on a solitary journey on the open road, where she learns to appreciate herself. Taylor spoke about the video's concept: "I drew inspiration from my own past as well as the star of the video, Madolyn Ropell. The lyrics really hit close to home with past experiences of broken relationships, whether it be romantic, family, friends. By following Madolyn on her journey of self-discovery, I wanted to show that it isn't easy to let yourself get lost but it's worth it when you gain total freedom to find yourself."
  • In March 2020, the band released a stripped-down, acoustic rendition of the track.
