Songfacts®:

  • This palpitating cut about the beginning of a relationship began as a remembrance of how Head and the Heart singer-guitarist Jon Russell met his girlfriend. However, it came to mirror the band's own origin story, which began when they serendipitously met through a series of open mic nights at Seattle's Conor Byrne pub back in 2009.
  • The genre-fluid track embraces elements of pop and hip-hop. In a press release, drummer Tyler Williams stated that the song is unlike anything they've ever done before. "A lot of the beats on that song are quicker, and there are high-hats that were never in our music before."
  • The song was The Head and the Heart's third #1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs. Their previous two chart leaders were 2011's "Lost in My Mind" and 2016's "All We Ever Knew."
  • The Head and the Heart wrote and recorded Living Mirage in various places around the US including Joshua Tree National Park. The song's music video is full of grainy clips from the band's recording sessions in the California location.

"During the making of our new album Living Mirage, we decamped to Joshua Tree, California to write and reflect," the band said. "This video captures the magic of that special place in spacetime for us."
