Songfacts®:

  • Written by Highwomen's Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby with Lori McKenna, "Crowded Table" is a call for a more inclusive world:

I want a house with a crowded table
And a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we're young and able
And bring us back together when the day is done

The tender tune is about acceptance, working together and making room for everybody to fit in.
  • The song was the fruit of an idea that Carlile had been mulling over for a long time. She explained to EW its concept is, "going out into the world and being an activist and furthering agendas that I think will make the world a better place, but still being able to come home at the end of the day and be in my family and be with people that do not agree with me so that we can all move a little bit closer to the middle of the road."
  • "Crowded Table" features the Highwomen quartet weaving in and out of unison. Carlile was taken aback that the vocal arrangements mirrored the song's concept. "Because even within our band, we do not all believe the same things," she said. "But to snap those voices back into unison like that is really what the concept of women learning to work together and community is."
  • "Crowded Table" soundtracked a Campbell's Soup Company commercial served up during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. The heart-tugging ad shows different people finding ways to connect while maintaining social distancing.
  • The "Crowded Table" video shows the four Highwomen members enjoying their time together in the studio while recording their eponymous debut album. The clip begins with low-fi footage from a rehearsal, giving fans the opportunity to hear the four women harmonize without the final production behind them. Their band, including Jason Isbell, also feature in the clip.
  • The video, released during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, made Maren Morris nostalgic for the times when they could all be with each other in person. "I'm just so glad we had footage of those really, really crucial moments of learning each other's rhythms," Morris said. "And hearing it now and watching it now, it really has amplified how I just miss being together, making music with my friends."
  • This won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song at the 2021 ceremony.
