Songfacts®:

  • In this album opener, lead singer Craig Finn raises a toast to "Saint Joe Strummer, our only decent teacher." Strummer was the frontman and lyricist for the influential British punk rock band, The Clash. Lead singer Craig Finn explained to Uncut magazine June 2008 his reference to Strummer: "Well, my heroes are people like Joe Strummer and Bruce Springsteen. People who make you feel anything's possible, that rock music, for instance, can be real big and important."
  • The lyric "doublewhiskeycokenoice" is a reference to a song by Dillinger Four from their 2007 album Midwestern Songs of the Americas.
