The "J" in the song title is a sweet waitress named Jessie, who has got herself mixed up with bad company. The narrator decides she is too good for him and is concerned she is "gonna crash into the harbor this summer."
  • Frontman Craig Finn told The Quietus regarding Heaven is Whenever's lyrical content: "The lyrics speak a lot about struggle and reward. Its about embracing suffering and understanding its place in a joyful life."
