Songfacts®:

  • On this track, the older narrator gives advice to a young listener about true love. This is the sort of song that fans will sing along to in concerts, and in an interview with Pitchfork, vocalist and chief songwriter Craig Finn was asked if he considers such things when he's writing them? He replied: "You can sort of tell… 'You can't get every girl; you get the ones you love the best.' Those couplets - you can kind of tell that there's a certain type of dude who's in our audience that you see his fist raised. It's not what I'd say I'm trying to do, or what I'm trying to say, but you can kind of think like, "Oh yeah, people are going to do a certain thing in that one."
