Songfacts®:

  • This industrial stomper was released as the first single from V. The track was recorded at The Church Studios with producer Paul Epworth – known for his work with the likes of Adele, Rihanna, Bloc Party, Florence + The Machine. He also worked with The Horrors on one of their previous tracks ("Falling Star" from Luminous).

Epworth has said in interviews that he listened to The Horrors 2009 album Primary Colours nonstop.
  • The song's music video is the work of CGI pioneer Jon Emmony, a Digital Art Director from London who works primarily with 3D design in the production of still and moving image. The clip features layers of simulations of microorganisms. Emmony said:

"The video for 'Machine' is based around the concept of computer simulation. The creatures, formed from sections cut and twisted from insects, crustaceans and bone are arranged in sculptural compositions inspired by artists such as Hieronymus Bosch; finding the surreal within mixed forms and scales. If left, taken away from an edit, the creatures would continue to exist and their movements would evolve. For me this was an exciting way to create digital imagery, as having an element of control removed and then decided by a computer seemed fitting with the track. Machines inside machines."
