  • This Beverley Grant composition is, to put it mildly, highly imaginative. Inez Garcia was the wife of a convicted terrorist who was serving time in Soledad State Prison. On March 17, 1974, she shot and killed Miguel Jimenez. After her arrest, she claimed Jimenez and another man had attempted to rape her. An hour or so before the murder, she and Jimenez had been involved in an argument over some kind of drug deal. By the time of her trial in Monterey, the attempted rape had morphed into an actual rape, and she didn't help her case by claiming that if she'd had the chance, she'd have killed the other man as well!

The jury of five men and seven women convicted her, but her cry of rape hadn't gone unheard. Feminist agitators funded an appeal, and on December 29, 1975, an appellate court quashed her second degree murder conviction. She was released on a $5,000 bond pending a retrial. On March 4, 1977, Inez García was controversially acquitted.

"Inez" follows the feminist narrative, that the killing of Miguel Jimenez was an act of self-defense. This defense has been used with mixed success in other jurisdictions, especially in Canada and the UK. >>>
