Songfacts®:

  • This is the only song by The Kinks ever to feature someone else besides Ray or Dave Davies on lead vocals. John "Nobby" Dalton, the group's bassist from 1969-1976, sang this in a tone very similar to Elvis Presley. >>>

  • Willesden Green is an area of London popular in the summer for its vibrant social scene. The singer here grew up in the area, and despite efforts to move to a more cosmopolitan area, finds himself drawn back to it by the people he misses.
  • The Kinks wrote this for the soundtrack of the 1971 movie Percy, which is about a man who receives a penis transplant. The Kinks wrote all the songs for the film, which did well enough in the UK to earn a sequel called Percy's Progress.
