Songfacts®:

  • Written by Kinks leader Ray Davies, he called this "a very political song about people going on strike."

With a disco groove and superhero theme, the message of the song was often lost, Davies sings about how an ordinary bloke has to be Superman to survive in these difficult times.
  • The Kinks weren't big on disco, but they knew it was the hot sound and decided to replicate it on this track. They did their research, heading to dance clubs to get the right groove, which they infused with their rock sound. When they delivered it to Clive Davis at their record company, Arista, Davis was thrilled, since he knew it had the contemporary hit sound.
