Songfacts®:

  • The Magic Numbers are an English pop-rock band comprising two brother and sister couplings: Lead guitarist Romeo Stodart and his bass guitarist sister Michele; keyboardist Angela Gannon and her drummer brother Sean Gannon. The quartet got media attention after playing to a sold-out show to a crowd of over 2,000 at The Forum in Kentish Town, London, before their first proper single, "Forever Lost," was released.
  • This song finds the band imploring an unseen someone to have an affair as their current lady friend "don't love me like you." Released as their second single, it was The Magic Numbers' biggest hit, peaking at #12 in the UK.
  • The band caused a stir when they were booked to perform "Love Me Like You" on Top of the Pops. They became the first artists ever to walk off the BBC show after host Richard Bacon introduced them as "a big fat melting pot of talent," a snide reference to the fact that the then fashionable wasted crackhead look was not really their image. "We were on stage, about to do this amazing thing, and it's like, OK, so we've just been insulted and now we're supposed to play through this song? No we don't need to do it," Romeo Stodart recalled to Q magazine.
