Songfacts®:

  • Credited as "The Miracles featuring Bill 'Smokey' Robinson," this was one of group's earliest charting singles, reaching #94 on the Billboard Pop chart.
  • Motown president Berry Gordy, Jr. had The Miracles record the song a couple of times during its chart run. The initial version had minimal orchestration, while the second one, which is played by most oldies stations today had added strings. Smokey Robinson told Mojo magazine he preferred the original version. "The record was doing really well but barely thought it would go further on the white charts if we added strings to it. But that didn't happen. Quality – wise, I don't think it's a better record with strings. It just didn't happen."
