Songfacts®:

  • In Search of the Lost Chord is a concept album around a broad theme of quest and discovery. The mysterious "lost chord" of the title is revealed in the last stanza of this spoken-word interlude to be the mantra "Om," which represents "Aum," a sacred mantra in the Hindu, Jain and Buddhist religions. It is chanted throughout "Om" the album's closing track.
  • In America, the Moody Blues' young fans looked upon the band as gurus with their quasi-spiritual lyrics. "We only have ourselves to blame for all that, really," admitted Justin Hayward to Q magazine in 1990. "We were just expressing things that we'd read and experiences that we'd had and spiritual things that we'd had and we were just expressing them in a very open and honest way without trying to be clever about it."
