Songfacts®:

  • The song's music video was directed by Jon J and Taylor Momsen and shot on location in Miami. It sees frontwoman Taylor Momsen walking down a corridor as a group of children are being fed subliminal messages on television screens. Later on we see the singer pull back her robes to reveal she is wearing nothing but a black cross across her body. Momsen said: "How do you sum up a song that is metaphorically speaking about everyone's life from any general perspective on video? You understate it."

"We decided to film variations of all of the issues we as a people are facing, whether personal, political or social," she continued. "We took a lot of shots, each representing some social constant or emotional struggle. Some overt, some subtle, but it's all in there."

"Everything is thrown at you from the day you're born," Momsen added. "Your only chance is to think for yourself... which is not as simple as it sounds."
  • Momsen expanded on the background to the video during an interview with Artist Direct. "It's pretty self-explanatory. I was trying to create a visual to go along with the song that has meaning," she said. "There's a lot of metaphor in the video. It's all right there."

"I'm still recovering from laryngitis because I started to get sick at that shoot," Momsen continued. "It was two sixteen-hour days with the fog machine going and me co-directing, talking loud over music and directing kids [Laughs]. I started to lose my voice. I put it all into the video and we ended up having to cancel a tour, which was a really big bummer. I've never lost my voice to the point where I couldn't sing or talk. It sucked, but I'm proud of the video."
  • The song's chorus is augmented by the Bronxville High School Chorus singing, "Oh Lord heaven knows we belong way down below." Taylor Momsen has admitted in interviews that that she suffers from Catholic guilt due to her upbringing.
  • This was The Pretty Reckless' first #1 on the Rock Radio chart. Taylor Momsen told The Pulse of Radio the band were the other side of the Atlantic when they learnt that this had become their first chart-topper. "We were in Europe and I went, 'Oh, it's great, we have a #1 in America and we're in Europe," she said. "No offense to Europe, Europe's awesome, but we're always in the wrong place at the wrong time."

  • Camille from Toronto, OhOne thing I did love about the video is when Taylor, who's still smokin' hot even tho she's mostly covered up, decides to give us a quick flash just a little after the two minute mark; not with complete nudity but just an excellent little unexpected surprise. Extremely well done.
  • Camille from Toronto, OhTaylor Momsen has an incredible, unique sound; love her voice. Here's a song that I loved immediately when I first heard it, which was yesterday on the car stereo. The video is good; I think it could rock out more with a big shebang at the end. But the song stands all on its own without need for video. Hope this becomes a huge hit. I love it.
