Songfacts®:

  • Psychedelic Furs lead singer Richard Butler writes some pretty bleak lyrics, but this is the first time he has taken the voice of the grim reaper. "It's basically alluding to death, and 'you'll be mine' is death saying 'you will come to me,'" he told Songfacts. "It's a little grim."
  • Richard Butler wrote this with his brother Tim, the bass player in the group. The song was released as the second single from Made Of Rain, the first Psychedelic Furs album since World Outside in 1991.

Many bands of brothers combust because the brothers can't get along, but that wasn't the case with The Psychedelic Furs. Richard and Tim founded the band, which was a six-piece for their first two albums, and broke up the group because the cycle of touring and recording was overwhelming, and they were sick of playing the same songs over and over. They formed a new group, Love Spit Love, which released two albums in the '90s, then in 2000 they put together a new lineup of The Psychedelic Furs so they could perform live. Without the pressures of the studio, they found themselves enjoying their time on stage and got a new appreciation for their old hits. By 2009, the group settled in with six members, including two who were with them for much of the '80s: saxophone player Mars Williams and drummer Paul Garisto. After years of kicking around song ideas and coming up with some new tunes for their live set, they finally got the album together in 2020 with help from producer Richard Fortus, who was in Love Spit Love with The Butlers and had since joined Guns N' Roses.
