Songfacts®:

  • The Rutles were a parody of The Beatles. This song started life as a Neil Innes solo song, which he performed on Saturday Night Live about 20 years before the Rutles' version was released. The version he did with The Rutles includes obvious nods to such Beatles songs as "A Day In The Life," "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," "I Am The Walrus," "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!," "Hey Jude," "Penny Lane," "For No One," and possibly countless others. Neil Innes also pays tribute to himself by singing lines from his own "Slaves Of Freedom" and "How Sweet To Be An Idiot" during the fadeout. >>>
