Songfacts®:

  • The Sandpipers were a quartet from Los Angeles. Three of them, Jim Brady, Mike Piano, and Richard Shoff, became friends while singing in the Mitchell Boys Choir and decided to pursue a career together. They were discovered by Herb Albert, who helped get them their big break. Joined by Pamela Ramcier, they produced a string of significant hits throughout the '60s, including covers of "Guantanamera" and "Louie Louie." This turned out to be their last major hit, and they split up in 1975.
  • This was the theme song to the Liza Minelli movie The Sterile Cuckoo, giving the song a huge boost. It played over the opening credits, which let viewers see the name of the song as it was playing. >>

  • Robin from Sherwood ForestDoes anyone remember a movie where Warren Oates' family reunites and plays an instrumental version of "Come Saturday Morning" (flute, piano, guitar)?
  • Alec from LondonYes the film (The Sterile Cuckoo) was based on a wonderful coming of age novel with the same name. How bizarre that Come Saturday Morning, so evocative and bittersweet, lost out in the Oscars to Rain Drops Keep Falling on My Head, a song about as dreary as the phenomenon it refers to.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn October 26th 1969, Liza Minnelli performed "Come Saturday Morning" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Four days earlier on October 22nd, 1969 the movie "The Sterile Cuckoo" opened in theaters across the U.S.A.
And just under two months later on December 14th, 1969 the Sandpipers' version of the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 at position #84; and on June 7th, 1970 it peaked at #17 {for 1 week} and spent 20 non-consecutive weeks on the Top 100...
The Los Angeles-based quartet had three other Top 100 records; "Guantanamera" {peaked at #9 in 1966}, "Louie, Louie" {reached #30 in 1966}, and "Free to Carry On" stayed on the chart for 4 weeks, peaking at #94.
  • Esskayess from Dallas, TxHard to picture them singing 'Louie, Louie.'
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyThis song was nominated for Best Song at the 1969 Academy Awards {Lost to "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" from the movie "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid"}!!!
  • Sara from Eckerty, InI'm sure this song was in movie I saw along time ago. Anybody know about that? I've always like the melody from the first I heard it. Sometimes it plays on the radio then I wonder what the name of the movie was.
  • Steve Dotstar from Los Angeles, CaI'mnot sure about the recorded version by the Sandpipers as the definitive one(if there is one at all)
but this is a marvelous song...kudos to Fred Karlin may he RIP.
