Songfacts®:

  • Sergeant Fury, also known as Nick Fury, Agent of Shield, is a Marvel Comics character who sprang from the pens of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the same team who created the Fantastic Four. Although not as well known as Spiderman, the X-Men and other Marvel heroes he has secured his place in history, and has been played on the big screen by the actor David Hasselhoff.
  • The single - backed by "Gang Bang" - was released Saturday, July 20, 1974, the day of the Knebworth Festival, at which the band played.
  • In the 2002 Firefly book The Sensational Alex Harvey, biographer John Neil Munro says the song, which was arranged by Derek Wadsworth, is "an engaging, amusing mix of 1930s dance band and Vaudevillian jump rhythm." This is true. As well as being sensational, Harvey was never afraid to experiment. Unfortunately the song, which is not really about Sergeant Fury, misses the mark, and probably for that reason it didn't make the charts. >>>
